You were in the midst of the Mysteries on the Move Scavenger Hunt when your brake light flickered on. It never went off and, by the time you headed home, you noticed that your brake pedal had become mushy.

A lighted brake indicator and mushy brakes are two indications that something is wrong with your brakes - perhaps your master cylinder. Other indications of brake problems include a leak, the pedal's sinking to the floor, or a complete brake failure.

"There are many components to a modern disc braking system, including a master cylinder, brake pads, a caliper, and a rotor," according to autochimps.com. "Once you press the brake pedal, the master cylinder sends pressurized brake fluid to the caliper. The caliper squeezes the pads against the rotor, creating friction and slowing wheel rotation.

"As you can see, the first step in the process is that the caliper receives brake fluid sent from the master cylinder. If there’s something wrong with the master cylinder, the rest of the system can’t operate."

Autochimps.com notes that the best response to failing brakes is to get your car to a trusted, knowledgeable brake specialist. You can find such a specialist at the Meineke Car Care Center on Mannhein Pike in Lancaster.  If that's inconvenient, try one of our other 12 car care centers in south central Pennsylvania:
