Ten Meineke Car Care Centers in south central Pennsylvania got together and ran a holiday special. The result - the 10 sent about 1,000 donated toys to Toys 4 Tots.
Last November, 10 of Meineke's Car Care Centers in south central Pennsylvania decided to do something nice for Christmas. So they joined together with each other and All Trans wrecker company. The Meineke stores offered to take $10 off car service if the owner would bring in a toy that could go to Toys 4 Tots. The deal was one toy per visit. All Trans donated $2,500 to the cause and substituted for the reindeer by delivering the toys to Toys 4 tots.
By the time the promotion ended Saturday (Dec. 17), they had amassed about 1,000 toys. The photo above from one Meineke Car Care Center gives you an idea of customers' generosity.
Toys 4 Tots website explains: "Toys for Tots began in 1947 as the brain child of Marine Corps Reserve Major Bill Hendricks. Actually it was his wife, Diane, who was the real inspiration. She had a few handcrafted dolls and asked Bill to deliver them to an agency that supports children in need.
"When Bill reported back to his wife that he could not find such an organization, she instructed him to “start one!”. Maj Hendricks and the Marines in his reserve unit in LA collected and distributed 5,000 toys in 1947.
"The Foundation raises funds, purchases toys, provides promotional and support materials, manages all funds raised and donated, solicits corporate support, educates the public, and handles day-to-day operations.
"Presently, the Marine Toys for Tots Program distributes an average of 18 million toys to 7 million less fortunate children annually."
