It's not officially summer yet, but you'd never know it from temperatures that are climbing into the high double digits. The only relief in sight are slightly lower temperatures predicted because of rain.
With those high temperatures are the tragic stories about children, puppies and kitties that have lost their lives because they were shut up in a hot car.
"It is NEVER safe to leave a toddler, disabled person or pet locked in a car, even in the winter. If you have a toddler in your household, lock your cars, even in your own driveway. Kids play in cars or wander outside and get into a car and can die in 10 minutes! Based on data from 1998-2022, an average of an average of 38 childhood heatstroke fatalities occur each year. Pediatric vehicular heatstroke deaths (PVHD) have occurred year-round," according to the National Weather Service.
It doesn't help to leave the air conditioner running while you're gone for "just a minute." A dog or child could turn it off or put the running car in gear while fidgeting. And they all fidget. Or, the auto air could simply fail.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't keep your auto air in working condition. Having it on while you're driving makes you and your passengers more comfortable during the trip.
