It is no surprise that your car is hard to start this Season.
It is cold and your car, like others, is famed for its cold weather crankiness. Yet, you weren't expecting problems when you took the kids to Brunch with Santa this morning. And these unexpected surprises don't make it easy, and it is certainly not welcome.
What is the culprit that makes it difficult to start your vehicle?
DairylandInsurance.com says the problem lies with one of four components:
- THE BATTERY. Cold temperatures slow the chemical reaction needed to get the battery started. And, at the same time, the cold is slowing and thickening the oil flow. As a result, this combination makes it impossible for the battery to get going quickly. The fix: a jump start and/or a new battery.
- THE ALTERNATOR. If your battery is not the culprit, the next most likely candidate is your alternator. The surest way to know you have a problem with the alternator is to test it. And, if it tests bad, you need a new alternator. It's that simple.
- THE FUEL SYSTEM. The entire problem could be a frozen fuel line. That can happen if water freezes after building up in the condensation tank, according to dairylandinsurance.com. And, the best way to handle this is to try to warm the car from the outside. But never pour hot water on any car part.
- OIL SYSTEM. If the engine oil is too thick, you can have trouble starting your car. Cold weather thickens oil. And, using a thicker oil than required during changes can make oil harder to move through your car's engine. So, the solution is to make sure you use an oil with the right viscosity so it will not slow down the engine.
